How to do Mothers' Day right (Utah child photography)

In my opinion, this dad gets super-sized bonus points for Mothers' Day this year. Not only did he coordinate a portrait session of he and his children for his wife, but he did so without her knowledge and on his own. Anyone who has had the task of getting their children ready for a portrait session will understand how stressful that can be. Can you imagine Mother's Day morning when his lucky wife opens these images of her favorite people and she didn't have to do any of it? It's just perfect! I almost didn't post these because as far as I know it's still a surprise, but C has assured me that A doesn't check my blog... but if you know her, don't let on that you know!

Garden Event 2009 (Utah Child Photographer)

What a great day in the garden yesterday! I am so thrilled about having such a treasure of a place in which to photograph. Last evening was a great way to do portraits. We had nine children running around the place, and I would pull a few out at a time to photograph. I would love to do more sessions in this way, so if you are interested in hosting a Portrait Party, let me know! Thanks again, ladies for braving the chill and the doggie poo. It was definitely a memorable evening!

Limelight (Utah Child Photography)

I have noticed with children that I photograph frequently (especially my own) that every session has a star. Two years ago when I created my mother's day portraits of my children in the Lion House gardens, that star was my baby girl (then one year old.) Eighteen months ago when we had our family portraits done downtown, my son's portrait was my favorite. This year, without a doubt was my oldest daughter's time to shine! This was totally her session. I can't believe how gorgeous this girl is. She literally takes my breath away every day.

Thanks to the three ladies who came over this evening (I guess by now, it would be LAST evening since it's three in the morning.) I have some really great images of your children too that I will be posting tomorrow! Stay tuned.

Sweetly Three

My baby girl turned three this weekend. Birthdays are big deals in our house, but with my Mother's Day event this year, I didn't have a lot of time to prepare for her party. I was at Wal-Mart at midnight desperately trying to pull a party together for the next afternoon, and still with no idea what to get her for a present. She had asked for a "Barbie Nutcracker" cake, and the movie so I thought I'd stick to that theme. She is 100% girly girl through and through. She loves Pink, and Barbie, and Princesses, and anything sparkly. So I decided to make her a "Clara" costume, and get three dozen pink balloons. You should have seen my husband and I gluing flowers on the tutu at 3:00 in the morning on Saturday! Everything came together like magic - the cake, the costume, the decorations (balloons are so effective and easy!) I felt like total Super-Mom for once instead of Slacker-Mom, and she paid me over and over with comments like "I love birthdays!" and "Mommy, you are a good cake maker." **SHINE** Life can be amazing sometimes.

I'm going to have to do a "real" portrait session of her in this tutu... It's so stinkin' cute on her!

Mothers (Utah Family and Child Photography)

Here are some more of my sweet mothers and their children that I've had the joy of photographing this week. I love this event. Every image seems to be so infused with love and agelessness. I love the simplicity that comes from black and white photographs. It sort of strips away all distractions and allows you to see the strength and beauty of each face. Thanks everyone for allowing me to preserve your relationships in my art! I know your gallery is running a teensie bit late, but as mothers you will understand that my baby turned three today, and she deserved my full attention! Your preview images will be ready very soon.

The Garden is READY! (Utah Child Photography)

Ok, ok, I know this is totally last minute, and I probably won't get any response because I am a total procrastinator, but I thought I'd just throw it out there anyway. I usually host a garden event along with my Black & White Mother's Day event, but this year I booked so many classic BW sessions in the studio, I didn't think I could do both events. In spite of that, I was over at my Mom's for dinner tonight, and her tulips and fruit trees are blooming so prettily I had to offer them to you! So, here's the deal:

I will do a handful of Complimentary Sessions in my mother's garden as long as your schedule can conform to the following:
  • The session must be on a weekday evening between now and May 1. I already have many appointments scheduled for my Mother's Day Black & White event, so my availability is limited.
  • The session must be between the hours of 6:00 pm and 8:00 pm (that's when I get this crazy amazing light back there - it's so yummy you can taste it!)
  • If the weather is bad, and we can't reschedule within the above parameters, I will not be able to extend this event. There's nothing for you to lose in trying, though, as there is absolutely no charge to reserve an appointment.
  • You must be willing to come to my home studio to view the images and order. I will not be posting the previews in an online gallery.
  • The garden is best suited for groups of 3 or smaller, especially children.
Give me a call if you have any questions, or if you'd like to get in on this sweet deal: (801) 556-1661. Also, I am in DESPERATE need of a orchard (preferably with grass and in bloom) for my own family portraits. If you know of anyone who would be willing to let me photograph in their orchard, let me know. I am willing to discuss location rental fees and finders fees.

PS Heather: This is your lens, girl!

J&J's Wedding Day (Utah - Idaho Wedding Photography)

Finally blue skies and warm sun! J&J your day was as beautiful as your smiles. Thanks so much for allowing me to hang out with you all day. It was so fun to be there for the whole thing, including the slumber party the night before. Hope you have fun at your open house this weekend.

Easter Highlights

Here's some highlights from our Fantastic "Ode to Grandpa H" Easter traditional egg hunt and weenie roast. All that was missing was the lawn tractor rides... maybe next year.

Grandma's cinnamon rolls started the day off right.
