In Loving Memory

I just want to take a minute and publicly honor three wonderful people who left our lives this week:

Theron Nestripke

Theron has always been and will always remain my number one fan. His family are as much family to me as my own flesh and blood, and he will be missed immensely. My gut has been all tied in knots all week thinking about his wife and children he left behind. Nearly twenty years of memories I could recall, but I think my favorite is the way he would pull me aside every time I came into the house and tell me about the next referral he was sending my way. I'm sure he's still talking me up on the other side, and if they could use portraits over there, I'm willing to bet he'd find a way to hire me.

Grandma-ma (Norlyene Harding)

I'm sure Grandma-ma had one of the best family reunions ever when she quietly slipped through the veil last weekend. She lost her Mother and brother in a car accident when she was 10 years old, and her son just a few years ago, and thinking of all those awesome loved ones, along with her father, greeting her and welcoming her home has made it impossible for me to be sad about her parting. She was one cool Granny! She was a pilot, an artist, and a dotting Grandma. I'll never forget going to the ballet, the symphony, and the opera with her. She is one of the major reasons I am an artist today, as well as the one who first started calling me Kris. Love you Grandma-ma!

Lloyd Wright

I had the humbling honor of creating a family portrait for this great Patriarch a few years back, but never really knew him personally. I do, however, know of him through his daughter Ann, who has been a good friend ever since we moved into our neighborhood. Brother Wright was one of those amazing Salt of the Earth people who left a legacy of love that will endure for generations. The stories of strength, wisdom, and good nature that I have heard about him fill me with hope for all mankind. He was the kind of person who changed the world just by living in it. My heart goes out to you Ann, in your grief, and your to your children.

Ladies and Gentlemen! (Utah child photography)

Our grand circus event was a blast! Thanks for all the participants who put so much time and effort into their costumes. And thanks so much for coming! I think everyone had a great time with the Balloon-Animal-Grandma. Now it is time for everyone to vote for best costume. The winner will receive a small canvas wall portrait, so tell everyone you know to vote either here, (by leaving a comment) or on my Facebook page. You needn't have been involved to cast your vote - the more votes the better! Voting ends June 19.

This is my vote for most awesome costume. This little dog-trainer even trained her dog in TWO DAYS to jump through the hoop. Such attention to detail deserves a wall portrait!!

Cheetah tamer and High Dive Act

Snake Charmer and Concession Vendor

Mime and Leopard Trainer

Tightrope Walker

Monkey Trainer with Monkey and Rainbow Clown

Lion Tamer

Horseback Riders and Lion "Whisperer"

Troupe of Clowns

The rest of these amazing kids aren't eligible for the prize (my kids!) but I had to show you how cute their costumes turned out anyway - my Ringmaster was especially awesome with his red mustache. I can't believe we found a mustache the same color as his hair! The costume gods were smiling upon us for sure. My stilt-walker has been practicing for months and is getting pretty good at it.

And of course my pouty horse rider who did not get enough attention earlier... So sorry babe! I am going to re-shoot my own kids later as I just didn't get what I wanted from them. Thanks again everyone, and vote by posting a comment!

The Circus is Coming!

You are all invited to come play with us!
Date: Thursday, June 9 from 6:00 till sundown (if the weather cooperates.)
Cost: Absolutely FREE. The only catch is your children have to come in circus costumes to be photographed. Everyone who participates will have one image file emailed to them (photographer's choice.) If you wish to purchase more portraits or files, they will be available online for special event pricing. If you want further details, email me at kris@kdportraits.com.
Props: We have a fantastic circus horse. Her name is Sally. She will be there, and I have a great pair of Swedish stilts. I'm toying around with some tight-rope ideas, but I'm not entirely sure how this will work. If you have anything that would look circus-y you are welcome to bring them along as well. I will be buying some balloons, and possibly some cotton candy.... Definitely popsicles for all that participate as well.
Costume Ideas: Ring Master (I have a black top hat!) Clowns, Acrobats, Animal Trainers (I have a small lion-taming chair and a whip), Horseback riders (dance costumes work great for this!) Bearded Lady, Strong Man (OH MAN, a sweet wrestling uniform would look awesome for this!) Get creative and wacky - the winner of best costume will receive a small complimentary signed canvas portrait!
Ages: All children from 3-14 are welcome. Sorry, no babies! We are going to be in a field of weeds, and it will be very difficult to keep tabs on little ones. Please wear good shoes, as there are a few sticker-weeds, and we will be trudging through tall grass.
Place: West Jordan field of dreams! If you would like to come, please call or email, and I will send you all the information, address, and directions: kris@kdportraits.com or call (801) 556-1661.
