Happy Halloween!!

Here's the images from our little Halloween event yesterday. I had a blast creating these images, and LOVED all the costumes! I have been toying with doing a mini Christmas event with either Santa or a themed set, but because we had such little turn out yesterday (only 3 families!) I'm rethinking it. Would everyone out there leave me some feedback? If you came, let me know what you liked/disliked about the event. If you didn't come, let me know what might have made you change your mind. I really like the idea of these fun, inexpensive events, but apparently I haven't found quite the right formula for them yet. Thanks C, L, and K for coming! I sure wish I had some images like these of some of the awesome costumes my mom made for me when I was little...

Yeah for Winners!

I want to announce that Suzanne has won a $35 gift certificate for posting a comment on my last blog entry! Congrats, girl! And thanks to every for your great comments. I want portraits for Christmas too. We'll see if my kids cooperate...

Mini Event for Halloween

There are few things in this life that I love doing better than making my kids happy. One really easy way to do this is by making their Halloween costumes, which, incidentally gives me quite a satisfying creative outlet as well. I absolutely LOVE Halloween. It's the one holiday that I never feel guilty about... that is to say, I never worry about what to give for Halloween, if I'm overlooking the True meaning of Halloween, or if I'm teaching my kids how to celebrate Halloween in their hearts. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy other holidays too, but Halloween always seems to just let me off the hook and allows me to relax and just have pure fun. Did I even mention the candy yet? Anyway, I've been wanting to do a Halloween event for the past couple years, and I know this is late notice, but I'm going to do a last minute mini event for anyone who wants some awesome Halloween portraits. Here's how it will work:

I will be available on Thursday, October 30 from 10:00 am til 7:00 pm at my home studio for Halloween portraits. The cost is $15 per digital file, which will be emailed to you unless 6 or more files are purchased. In that case, I will burn them onto a CD for you to pick up. Groups are allowed, but be aware that in my small home studio, I really can't do a good grouping of more than 4 or 5 (depending on the size of the subjects.) These portraits are going to be very simple, with no props, just showcasing your children (or yourselves!) and the costumes. You don't need an appointment, but if you make one ahead of time, I'll let you cut to the front of the line. If you have any questions, please call me (801) 556-1661. Also, would you PLEASE tell everyone you know about this event, as I am only posting it here on the blog, and in some direct emails.

Here are my kids in their Halloween glory this year:

The most beautiful Ariel ever to surface from the ocean: I was so pleased she chose this costume this year, as I've thought it her perfect alter-ego since she was born.

No, he's not Peter Pan, and he will get very offended if you suggest it. He is Link from the Legend of Zelda - thus both the bow and the sword. Check out that warrior face!

And finally, it's Mr. Tumnus from the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. This is honestly her favorite movie and character, and she picked this as what she wanted to be for Halloween: it makes me laugh every time I think about her bizarre choice.

Gift Certificate Event

I don't know why, but for some reason, my Christmas Rush hit about a month ago. I have been so busy since returning from Europe, that I haven't had time to even finish my laundry! I know, TMI, but there is a point to all this rambling: I know there are several of my best clients out there who were waiting for a Fall Portrait Event. Because I just didn't have time this year to support one, I had to make the hard decision of not hosting a regular event this season. However, I do want to say thank-you to everyone, so I am offering the following:

Through November 26, all Gift Certificates up to $100 in value will be 50% off. This means you can buy a $100 Gift Certificate for only $50. Buy one for everyone on your list, or just save one for yourself to use next spring! This Event will only be advertised by direct e-mail to my current clients and on this blog, so spread the word to everyone you know.

Also, because I'm trying to draw out you lurkers out there, and reward people who actually read my boring posts without photos, I will give a $35 Gift Certificate to one randomly drawn person. To enter, just leave a comment on this post about why you want portraits for Christmas! I will draw the winner at 9:00 pm on Saturday, October 25. Thanks everyone for being so understanding and loyal. You are the reason I love my job!

Not just green and red

Every year at this time I get to design Holiday cards. It's one of my very favorite parts of my job. If you haven't seen the stunning quality of one of my custom cards, you need to come over and check them out. These babies are gifts in themselves, and I have seen them on refrigerator doors not only through the holidays, but all year round. People don't throw these cards away!

Anyway, every card I design is completely customized around the images chosen, and I always get requests for "something more Christmas-y" or "more green or red." I totally understand the reasoning behind this, but I also love using the colors from the images themselves to make something outstanding and unique. Yesterday I had a fabulous session of my little niece, and her images screamed "Holiday Card!" to me, so I designed a quick mock-up. I love the warm colors and cozy feel of the whole thing - it makes me want to hug her. This girl's got dimples to die for! Let's do an informal poll on this one: send me comments and let me know what you think: perfect as is? or more red and green?

Planning, planning, planning!

I can't stress enough how much smoother a portrait session will go if we have a Pre-Session Consultation. I have been planning this session for about a month with this great mom. We talked about everything from what colors their house is decorated in (green and brown, by the way) to what things they like to do as a family. I know some of my questions may have seemed a little funny at the time, but the answers all give me the tools I need to create a truly customized portrait. Also, I want to thank this patient family for being flexible enough to reschedule due to weather. I think we got far better results than we would have that rainy Saturday!

I love when the session is "over," and then the fun stuff starts happening! This is when I really love my job, and my clients start laughing at me because I'm literally jumping up and down on my toes giggling and saying, "Ooo, ooo, ooo!" Happy 11th, J&A - November anniversaries RULE!

Sneak Peek for the L Family

Ok, this family gets my Seal of Approval and Gratitude for their fabulously coordinated outfits. I know some families don't like to be all in the same color, but in this case, look how well each individual's face stands out, and how secondary the clothing is. I LOVE this look, especially for a fall portrait. I can't imagine how long it took to coordinate this. Well done, guys! I tried something a little different at the end of this session just to challenge myself and add a little variety. Let me know what you think. Oh, and the last image is to prove that she CAN, in fact, smile! :-)

Autumn Magic

Ok, so if you wanted fall portraits this year, this was the week to do it. I've heard of the awesomeness of Millcreek canyon, but since I hang out in the southern end of the valley most of the time, I have only shot there once before. Next year, I'm shooting ALL of my fall portraits there. It was just absolutely breath-taking there last week! Combine that with a very good looking family with adorable 6-year old twins, and it's just pure magic. Thanks so much, T family for being so very patient while we created these images. I'm still reeling over the fact that we used to live on the same street! What a small world!

Switzerland Calendars to Profit Make A Wish Foundation

I am so pleased to announce that I am offering a limited edition calendar of the best images from my visit to Switzerland this year. I loved that every house I visited over there had one or two or more artistic calendars, and they all had a very distinct style. My calendars are patterned after this European style, and each page is 11x14 inches. They are available for $24.99 each (plus tax and shipping if applicable) Two-thirds of my net profits from this project will be donated to the Make A Wish Foundation in thanks for the wish they are granting to my neice. I only had 50 to begin with, and I've already sold several before posting this blog. These are fantastic Christmas gifts, so call today before they're gone! I've posted the cover and back page with all the images in the calendar, but if you'd like to view one just call me - you really have to see how beautiful they are to appreciate them. Also, custom framed art prints are available from any of the 13 images in the calendar, or my award winning image "Ascension." If you are interested in these, call for a personalized quote.

Feelin' the Love

Let's talk about Love for a minute. First of all, I absolutely LOVE this family. These are my fellow Harry Potter fanatics and neighbors. The kids have all been my babysitters for about 4 years now, and our family loves hanging out with their family. We get together every few months and do dinner. D is the BEST griller I have ever known, and is truly a magician with chicken. In fact, I brought my kids to their portrait session, and after we were done photographing, we had dinner in the canyon, and visited until dark. What an awesome way to end a family portrait session!
That brings me to my second point about love: these guys really love each other. Being around them, one gets the feeling that these guys would do anything for each other. They actually like hanging out with each other, and you can feel that bond even through the typical sibling teasing and bantering that occurs in every family. I really hope my kids have this bond as they get older, too.

Lastly, I LOVE fall family portraits!! The leaves in the canyon were just starting to turn last week, and I can just TASTE those colors in these images. I'm tempted to do my basement in fall colors just so I can always hang up gorgeous fall portraits. This is without a doubt my favorite time to be a photographer! If anyone wants to grab a fall session, I did have a couple cancellations, so my calendar has opened up a bit. There are only a couple weeks a year to get this look, so don't procrastinate.
