The First Ten Years

This May marks the 10th anniversary of my photography business. I started in May of 1998 with a senior portrait. I was using 35mm film in a camera I bought used from Crossroads Mall, and trying to earn enough money to pay for my school expenses. I had to develop and print about four rolls of film a week just for my class assignments, and that didn't count what I was shooting on my own. It was expensive! I distinctly remember one of my professors at the end of my senior year at the University of Utah tell me and my classmates that in 5 years only 5% of us would still be doing photography for a living. Ten years later, I really wish I could find that professor and tell him how fortunate I have been to continue doing what I love. Making portraits is really more than a job for me. It is my passion! I honestly can't sleep sometimes because I'm thinking about my up-coming session, or print competition, or that family down the street who hasn't had a family portrait created for seven years. This is what I dream about!

In appreciation and celebration of the last ten years, I am launching the May Anniversary Event! Here's what this awesome Event will include:
  • Valid the month of May only, I am offering 10 sessions for $10! You will save up to $190 just on the initial investment alone. This offer will expire after I book the first 10 sessions or May 31, which ever happens first.
  • In addition to this amazing offer, all portrait orders placed in May will receive 10% off! No exclusions, no fine print: all portraits, frames, custom greeting cards, Storyboard portraits, Highlights albums, and anything else ordered in May will be 10% off.
  • This is a blog and website only event. I will not be advertising this event in any other way, so you need to tell everyone you know about this offer! Direct them to the website or this blog for details, but don't let anyone be disappointed they missed it. Referral Certificates WILL be valid for the event, so if you need more, please let me know, and I will get you as many as you need.
  • At the end of May, I will draw a name for a $50 gift certificate to The Cheesecake Factory. To enter the drawing, all you need to do is post a comment on my blog between now and May 31 at 9:00 pm. Every comment you post gives you another chance in the drawing - just make sure you email me your contact information (name, address, phone number, and email address.) so I can notify you when you win: kris@kdportraits.com.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to live my dream and do what I love! You know that the people I photograph are "mine" and I cherish the friendships and associations this business has brought me. Here's to the next 10 years with you!

You've got Style

I'm often asked what my photographic style is. It's a harder question to answer than one might think. The tricky thing is that "style" is an evolutionary phenomenon, and it keeps changing with trends and technological advances. This being said, however, I'm very grateful for some pretty unique educational experiences that have given me an invaluable foundation in lighting, posing, and exposure. I can't imagine trying to jump into some of the more contemporary trends that are so hot in photography right now without having that classical training first. Even though I love trying new things, and keeping up with trends, there is nothing like that timeless, gorgeous portrait that will become a prized heirloom. I'd like to think that at this time, my portraits are a really nice mix of classic and modern styles, so if you can come up with a name for that, then I'd have an answer to that really hard question.

Hey, S, here's your sneak peek! Your family has DEFINITELY got style!

Mother's Day Gift 2008

My kids had my photo albums out this morning, and it made me very nostalgic. When I was growing up, my Mom had one album that had all of my siblings' and my school portraits in it. I remember looking through it for hours; comparing each sibling to each other; comparing myself at different ages. We laughed at what we were wearing one year, cringing at that haircut another year. It felt like a rite of passage each fall when we would add that year's portrait to the collection. Looking back, it was probably this one album more than anything else that influenced me to become a photograher. Now that I have my own kids, I have a rediculous number of scrapbooks and albums, full of snapshots and candid moments in time; however, it's my kids' yearly professional portraits that will always mean the most to me. Here's this year's storyboards that my moms are getting for Mother's Day next month, as well as some of our past images.

Portrait Parties 2.0

Ok, so I had a good photographer friend review my Portrait Parties program, and she told me frankly, "Kris, you have to re-do this." So, because I am new at parties, and she is much wiser and experienced than I am, I have re-organized the Portrait Parties program. The best change is that there is NO initial investent! That's right, you can host your portrait party at NO CHARGE to you or your guests. I'm still offering a complimentary 16x20 for the first host/hostess to book a party. This is an amazing offer, so contact me soon. Click on the parties link to see the updated program on my website: http://www.kdportraits.com/.

Due to a couple cancellations in my schedule, I am extending the Springtime Garden Event to include the following days: Saturday, April 12, and Saturday, April 19. Please call immediately if you are interested in reserving a session on either of these days, as my Saturdays do tend to fill up quickly.
