Grandma's Portraits (Salt Lake Professional Photography)

I've been meeting with a group of photographers who are all trying to get our prints ready for the local and national competitions coming up in the next month. We all have a project - a self assignment - to fulfill each meeting. This past one we were asked to create images with "negative emotions." It's been over 10 years since my Grandma-ma has had a professional portrait created, and my Dad asked if I would do it. I thought "Great! I'll combine this session with my assignment and kill two birds with one stone." Well, Grandma-ma showed up at the studio, and she looked FANTASTIC. She'd had her hair and makeup done, so my idea of creating an image with the emotions "old" and "worn" was pretty much shot to blazes. Then I thought I'd go for "lonely" or "sad", but she was just WAY too happy the whole night. I mean, look at this smile! It wouldn't leave her face. She used to sing opera, and I could tell that the Diva in her was totally loving the whole session. So, after giving up on my group assignment I decided to just capture her as she is, and I got "beautiful", "loving", "joyous" and "satisfied" - which are just fine by me when I think of my granny.
